What are Mind-Body Therapies and Practices?

The mind refers to our thoughts, feelings/emotions, beliefs, attitudes and images.

The body refers to the brain, nervous system, endocrine and immune systems, the organs in our body, and the electromagnetic and subtle energy systems.

You may have heard of subtle energy through such terms as life force, chi, prana, meridians, chakras, biofields or auras. These terms refer to the biomagnetic and bioelectric energy fields associated with the human physiology. These energies are called “subtle” because the fields are not easily detectable and scientists have not been able to develop instruments to reliably measure them. However, many people for centuries and across cultures have described sensing subtle energies to varying degrees.

The mind and the body share a common chemical language and changes in one affect the other.  For example, physical illness affects the emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of our being. Stress can be felt in the physical body.

Therapies such as cognitive behavioural, and the use of imagery, focus on the mind to affect the body. Therapies can also be directed at the body to affect the mind.

Energy Psychology Therapies are a particularly effective example of Mind – Body Therapies.
